Where next for Microsoft, Yahoo and Google?

As 2009 begins, the internet sector faces a challenge to rebuild itself after Microsoft’s

failed takeover of Yahoo, and Yahoo’s failed advertising deal with Google.

By Simon Brew, 5 Jan 2009 at 18:13
Back in June last year, as the potential union between Microsoft and Yahoo all but

disintegrated, the latter’s now ex-chief executive Jerry Yang was regarded as a man taking a

bit of a gamble. In resisting Microsoft’s proposed $44 billion merger deal (read: takeover),

Yang angered some shareholders, and confused many analysts.

After all, what rabbit was Yahoo about to pull out of the hat? What shoots of business

brilliance were forthcoming that allowed Yang to be so bullish about a firm that had

struggled to find a foothold in the past year or two? Outflanked by the likes of Facebook

and finding no way to even dent the armour of Google, Yahoo looked very much the Web 1.0

company fighting in a marketplace that had long since moved on. Not only that, it had also

turned away a bid that even the more generous observer conceded had overvalued the company.

But Yang nonetheless successfully resisted the Microsoft takeover, and instead sought solace

with a tie-up with Google. The pair agreed an online ad-deal that would see Yahoo utilise

Google’s advertising systems, with the latter’s ads appearing next to the former’s search

listings in some cases. Microsoft, meanwhile, pulled out of the potential takeover

altogether (and initially threatened that a more hostile deal could be in the offing), and

instead argued that the Department of Justice needed to step in.

This wasn’t surprising either, given that some alarm bells were ringing as to whether such a

deal between two big companies would even be allowed to get through the necessary regulatory

steps. The deal, which was set for three years with renewal options taking it potentially up

to 10, was said by Google to not need regulatory approvals. However, it nonetheless held

back on kick starting it for nearly four months to allow the necessary bodies to take a

look, with many observers noting that it might hit more problems than it was publicly saying

it was expecting.

Thus, it wasn’t a major surprise when the deal between the two parties was halted. Google

decided to pull out of the prospective partnership after it was informed by the US Justice

Department that it was filing a lawsuit to get the deal blocked. If it had gone ahead, it

would have given Google access to around four fifths of the web search market, and the firm

no doubt figured that it would be embarking on a battle it didn’t stand much chance of

winning. As Google legal officer David Drummond posted: “...it's clear that government

regulators and some advertisers continue to have concerns about the agreement.”

The Department of Justice argued that a deal would have removed the incentive for Yahoo to

fight Google in certain areas. Its statement read “Had the companies implemented their

arrangement, Yahoo’s competition likely would have been blunted immediately with respect to

the search pages that Yahoo chose to fill with ads sold by Google rather than its own ads,

and Yahoo would have had significantly reduced incentives to invest in areas of its search

advertising business where outsourcing ads to Google made financial sense for Yahoo.”

Microsoft, meanwhile, lost little time in championing the decision by the US Department of

Justice, claiming that the decision – in the words of a statement delivered by general

counsel Brad Smith – “is significant for advertisers, publishers and consumers, who voiced

overwhelming concern about this illegal deal to law enforcement and policymakers.”

Highways Agency combines with Google for route 2.0

The Highways Agency is working with Google to make traffic data available for use within the Google Maps traffic feature.

The traffic feature creates a colour-coded layer of the average speeds on England's motorways and major A road network onto the existing Google Map facility with different colours indicating the current speed of traffic.

The Highways Agency provides its traffic information to Google in a Datex II format, which is a European standard developed specifically for road data information exchange. The Datex organisation provides tools to convert the data model into an XML schema.

The system provides real-time traffic information and predictions based on past conditions, helping motorists to plan their journeys ahead to avoid congestion.

Denise Plumpton, director of information at the Highways Agency, says providing the data for the mash-up is a key part of the agency's information strategy designed to get traffic information out to motorists where and when they need it.

"We work regularly with third-party organisations to get our information to as wide an audience as possible," she says.

By publishing data to a wide audience, in a format in which they can use it, the Highways Agency is fulfilling its remit to help people avoid hold-ups, which in turn helps reduce congestion.

As well as reaching the Google mapping service, traffic data, provided by the agency's National Traffic Control Centre in Birmingham, is used to populate the Agency's own Traffic England website.

Highways Agency spokesman Anthony Aston says the agency would provide the same raw data to businesses wishing to integrate it with their applications as is available to Google, subject to discussion.

However, large businesses requiring detailed traffic data to integrate with internal applications can use the text-based Atlas Professional system direct from the agency.

Atlas Professional allows businesses to view only data from the areas which concerns them. This feature also enables you to create a customised RSS traffic information feed, thus providing headlines alerts for specific roads defined in "My Areas".

Meanwhile, City Timegrid is a high-level overview of the current state of the road network shown as current travel times between major destinations. In the coming months, new destinations will be added to the 14 existing choices in the City Timegrid.

The agency is gathering feedback from users before deciding which cities, event venues or transport interchanges will be included on this feature of Atlas Pro.

The agency is considering a number of future projects to build application from a variety of sources of traffic data, Aston says. There is the potential to bring in traffic data from organisation who run large fleets of vehicles, such as National Express. Satellite navigation systems could also provide a rich source of data.

"Obviously if TomTom has got 500 sat-navs on a section of the M1, there is a lot of useful information on traffic flow there," says Aston.

Data could be combined with the Highways Agency's own and republished for the benefit of businesses and all road users, Aston says.

Google Chrome Goes Gold With 1.0 Release

Google's Chrome Web browser for Windows is no longer beta software. The company released Chrome 1.0 on Thursday, a mere 3-1/2 months after its initial release.
That's the blink of an eye compared with Gmail's gestation in beta, which began in April 2004 and continues to this day. And the speed at which Google is moving underscores Chrome's strategic value to the company.

Google describes its business as search, ads, and apps. Search and ads, it dominates. The online applications market remains contested, not to mention the mobile applications market. Google needs a browser of its own, so it isn't dependent on the goodwill of Apple, Microsoft, or Mozilla for access to its users.

"We're going to rip the beta label off with our 15th release," said Brian Rakowski, product manager for Google Chrome, in a phone interview. "The engineering team has been fixing a lot of bugs and working on stability, working on making the product really rock solid. We're pretty excited about that."

To some extent, the 1.0 designation is meaningless. Rakowski said that Google isn't going to spend a lot of time talking about numbered iterations. "We're trying, throughout the whole Chrome development process, to release features very quickly, so we have a lot more stuff coming down the pipe," he said. "The main point of this is that it's a rock-solid product that's ready for anybody to use, not just early adopters."

In other words, Chrome is both done and a work in progress. Mac and Linux versions are still being worked on, with no declared target date for release. New features, like an API for extensions, also are under development. And then there are the bugs. Google's Chrome bug-tracking system lists more than 2,400 open issues. Not all of them are bugs and not all are serious bugs, but clearly plenty of significant issues remain.

"There's no question that we have a lot of work to do," Rakowski conceded. "If you compare it to other projects of this scope, it's not unusual to have many thousands of open bugs. What we try to do is triage those bugs carefully and make sure that we're taking care of the most important ones, the ones that are affecting most users. Lots of those bugs have been targeted for this release to close."

Fair enough. Chrome feels fast and stable, at least far more so than the days after its initial release, when a large number of problems surfaced, alienating users not accustomed to Google's release-early-and-often habit.

Perhaps the most meaningful consequence of Chrome's 1.0 designation is that Google will be able to pitch its browser to distribution partners as a finished product, rather than the noodling of a few engineers over the weekend.
