Leave a Comment & We’ll Donate $1 To Fight Poverty

Wednesday October 15th is “Blog Action Day: Poverty” and so far 11,211 blogs/websites have participated in this massive awareness campaign, including your friends here at Site-Reference. We hope you can join us! Simply post a comment below and Site-Reference will donate $1 (per comment) to Kiva.org.
What is Kiva and why are we supporting it?

Well, a lot of us here are self-starters and while we’ve worked hard, we were given opportunities the majority of the world’s population simply don’t have.
You know, little things like quality education, the proper infrastructure (access to the computers, internet, etc), and most importantly financing. No matter what, it takes $$$ to make $$$. Whether its a few bucks to keep you fed while you get going, or a few million to create the next great piece of software, all entrepreneurs need some money to start with.
With Kiva, fortunate entrepreneurs such as us are able to make small loans to those in the developing world that can then turn them into profitable businesses and sustain themselves, their families and in some cases their communities over the long run. And the best part- once these loans are repaid they go to help the next guy/girl.

For more on Kiva checkout their page here: http://www.kiva.org So if you’re reading this- leave a comment- it’s the least you can do and we’ll donate $1 to Kiva.

Or if you have more than the 2 seconds it takes to leave a comment, get involved yourself at Kiva.org or go help out that charity you’ve always told yourself you’d get involved with.

On Monday Ocotber 20th, we’ll tally up all the comments and we will make our donation at that time.

Many thanks for your continued support, Nic, Dave and the Site-Reference crew

Is Blogging Good Search Engine Optimization?

by Nick Stamoulis

So you’ve decided that you need to start a blog. Everyone else has one. The competition has two. You think they’re cool (now that you know what they are) and you’d like to start one. Is it good for Search Engine Optimization?

The real answer is, Yes, blogging is good for Search Engine Optimization - if you do it right. If you don’t do it right then it can water down your Search Engine Optimization. Here’s what I mean.
First, the two types of blogs for Search Engine Optimization: On Site and Off Site.

You can put a blog on the same domain name as your website and build your search engine saturation. That means the number of pages you have indexed at the search engines and potentially ranking for your keywords. Every blog post is a separate web page to the search engines so after you’ve written one year’s worth of blog posts (assuming you blog every day), you now have 365 additional web pages. But are they optimized?

With this type of blog, you have to use keywords, alt tags, anchor text, and other SEO elements in order to ensure that you gain the necessary mojo to rank for your keywords.

An off site blog is different. With an off site blog, you’ll still gain search engine saturation, but it will be for the blog itself, not your website. You can, however, build links to your website from your blog and that helps with link building.

Keep in mind, though, that most people in your industry will more than likely link to your blog posts before they’ll link to your company website. If your blog is on your company website, you may or may not get that link love. If your blog is on a separate URL then you’ll likely get link love - if your blog posts are well written and draw attention from other bloggers. That will tend to push your blog higher up in the PageRank scale. If you are linking profusely from your blog to your website then that PR will transfer to your website with each link.

That’s it in a nutshell. Blogging is good for Search Engine Optimization when done correctly. Most bloggers, however, are missing the beat here. To be the most effective blogger, you should learn the principles of Search Engine Optimization.

Top 10 security predictions for 2009 Part. 1

What will next year hold in the ever-changing world of IT security?

By Asavin Wattanajantra, 6 Jan 2009 at 18:05

New tech means new ways for criminals to attack systems. Next year will see hackers get smart about cloud computing, social networking and more. Here's our top ten threats to keep an eye on...

Malware 2.0

Malware will increasingly target Web 2.0 as well as cloud services. New cloud-based services - such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure - are vulnerable new targets for cybercriminals or spammers.

The cloud could be used simply to send spam, but it also could launch sophisticated attacks such as hosting malicious code for downloads.

Web 2.0 has also created an environment where malware can change depending on an event or a situation. Separate harmless bits of malware can be constructed to combine and maliciously attack.

A good example of this is with mash-ups, where data from many websites can be reconstructed to create something malicious.

Malware-as-a-service becomes more common, which will allow automated malware to be bought and sold to order. This will be a big problem, as it lowers the technical level needed for criminals to become online fraudsters.

An explosion in new malware variants and web threats

Anti-virus vendor Symantec claims that new strains of malware consisting of millions of distinct threats can propagate as a single, core piece of malware. This will create a number of unique malware instances.

Indeed, research has shown we have now reached an inflection point where we are now more malicious programs than legitimate ones. Businesses and vendors need to move away from signatures and concentrate on detection methods, such as the reputation-based approach.

As web services keep increasing, and as browsers start to move towards a uniform standard for scripting language, expect new web-based threats.

Social networking spam

As the year went on, criminals were gradually moving from email-based spam to different techniques. One of these was social networking spam, where websites such as Facebook and MySpace were targeted.

Personal information is gold to the bad guys, and they will learn better tricks to persuade users to give away their details and find ways to access private accounts.

The rise in popularity of social networking sites that allow user-generated content will be a problem. Web spam will increase as will malicious posting into user-forums and blogs.

Security firm Websense claims that new web attack toolkits have emerged that allows attackers to discover posts and/or have vulnerabilities. Bots may also add more HTTP post functionality among their many capabilities.

Gordon Brown eyes speedy broadband to ease recession

It’s an ambitious and worthy idea. But how much money is he talking about, and who is going to get it?

By Asavin Wattanajantra, 6 Jan 2009 at 14:59

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has revealed ambitious plans to usher in a new digital age in a government infrastructure drive which could create up to 100,000 jobs.

Speaking to the Observer, Brown said that he planned investment in superfast broadband, which could be the modern version of Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” in the 1930s, which directed much-needed money towards public works such as dams and roads.

He compared the building of roads, bridges and railways, which were anti-recession measures made to stimulate the economy after the Great Depression, with the situation now where a recession is looming and we're all being hit hard by the credit crunch.

Brown said: “You could [by comparison] talk about the digital infrastructure and that form of communications revolution at a period when we want to stimulate the economy. It’s a very important thing.”

Rory Cellan-Jones, commenting on his technology blog on the BBC website, said that he acknowledged digital communications could be very important.

However, he was far from clear about how much public money would be spent on the fast broadband service, or who would get it. He quoted a figure of £29 billion from the Broadband Stakeholder Group.

He also said that BT and Virgin Media were the only two companies with the scale to take a fibre network across the UK.

IT PRO revealed last year that BT was willing to invest £1.5 billion in a national fibre-optic service to around 10 million homes and businesses.

However, he warned that putting public money into superfast broadband could stir up a number of issues, such as the possibility of giving the big companies like BT too much power.

What's more, as everybody would want an equal stake in it as it would be “broadband for all”, it could potentially cause a conflict with the wishes of company stakeholders.

He said: “Once the public sector is involved, every household may come to see fast broadband – like free healthcare – as a right, not a privilege.

“In short, then, finding the public money to pump into fast broadband might be the easy bit. Designing the pumping mechanism will be a lot harder.”

A Digital Britain report, which IT PRO has already revealed is likely to suggest that every house in the country should have broadband, will be released later this month.

Mac Gains On Windows Part. 2

By : Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Mac OS X's market share was up 2.3 percentage points during 2008, an annual growth rate of 31.7%.

Net Applications again attributed some of the decline of Windows and the corresponding growth of Mac OS X to special circumstances. "The December holiday season strongly favored residential over business usage," the company said on its Web site. "This in turn increases the relative usage share of Mac...and other products that have relatively high residential usage. All December usage statistics should be read in that context."

Last month, Net Applications' executive vice president of marketing, Vince Vizzaccarro, said November's drop in Windows share was due to the higher-than-average number of weekend days and the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. Net Applications has consistently reported that Windows' share slips during times when browsing is conducted from non-work computers, where Microsoft's operating system dominates even more than in homes.

Even so, Windows' market share fall for November-December 2008 was more than twice that of any similar period in the preceding three years. During the same two months of 2007, for example, Windows lost 0.7 of a percentage point, while in 2006 and 2005, Microsoft's operating system dropped 0.45 of a percentage point and 0.51 of a percentage point, respectively.

As has been the case throughout most of the year, Windows XP accounted for the bulk of Microsoft's downturn. During December, the seven-year-old operating system lost 1.1 percentage points. Windows Vista 's share, on the other hand, increased slightly to finish the year just above 21%.

Net Applications' operating system market share numbers can be found on the company's Web site.
